Demographics

The main issue we wanted to tackle when researching demographic data was whether the community and neighborhood surrounding SHS also reflects the makeup of the student body. We wanted to see whether the neighborhood is a representation of SHS, or if it was indeed drastically different, as the physical surroundings indicated.

Surrounding Community:

We researched demographic data of the 94619 area code, the surrounding area of the school.

Estimated median house/condo value in 2011: $496,100
Estimated Median Household Income: $73,938
Residents with Income below the poverty level: 13.2%

Analysis:

As above data illustrates, the race breakdown of the SHS student body is drastically different than the breakdown of the surrounding neighborhood. The 94619 area code has white majority while the SHS community is pretty evenly split between African Americans and Hispanics. The data suggests that the student body at SHS is not likely living in the area and that the neighborhood kids, a majority of whom are white, are attending school elsewhere. Average home prices and annual income in the neighborhood surrounding Skyline is significantly higher than the majority of students, 61% of whom qualify for free/reduced lunch, further suggesting the students who attend Skyline do not live in the neighborhood surrounding the school.
